To what extent does your film experiment with conventions of narrative and genre?

Pulp Fiction was made in 1995 directed by Quentin Tarentino. It has many tropes from various genres including: noir, crime, action and comedy. It could be classed as an experimental film as the narrative is out of order. As well as that, there are three different stories being told at once- Jules and Vincent's story, Vincent and Mia's story and Butch's story. Later Pumpkin and Honey Bunny's story is added in to inter-twine with Jules and Vincent. 

 The interweaving of Tarantino’s three stories puts a spin on the commonly used linear structure for films and presents it in an interesting way that allows themes of chance to dictate the narrative. An example of how this plot structure creates interesting results is with Vincent who is killed in one scene in the movie only to reappear again in the final scene. This has the ability to confuse the audience whilst also engage them and try to reconstruct the narrative into a linear structure. 

 Pulp Fiction is an example of a post-modernist film as many elements of post-modernism are featured in it. The film is said to be pastiche as Tarantino took many different scenes and imitated them whilst adding many scenes with intertextuality to reference other films and genres. There is also a scene of reflexivity alluding to the fact that it is a constructed media form. This is seen when Mia draws the square in the air and the audiences sees an outline of a square as a result. Ordinarily, this would not be seen in the type of gangster film that it seemed like Tarantino was aiming to portray at first. Pulp fiction can have an inconsistent tone at times due to the hybridity of it. It blends together multiple genres including: film noir, crime, action and comedy. The film combines a range of genres and sub-genres to create a distinctive narrative.

"Soft" and "Wasp"

" Soft"  and "Wasp" "Soft" is a short film that tackles with themes of bullying, fear and feeling overpowered. It contains both a father and a son who are assaulted by the same group of people. This leads to a small rift between the father and the son. "Wasp" also creates tension between child and parent as the mother often neglects her children to go out and have a good time. Both films use the characters clothing and environment to tell the audience more about them. For example, it is clear that the father in "Soft" works and is quite sensible from the way that he and his house looks whereas the gang members are shown on the street and in a dirty alley wearing tracksuits and chains. "Get off my Land" and "Ralph"

"Get off my Land" and "Ralph" “Get off my land” and “Ralph” are both British short films that deal with the theme of isolation in a new and unknown territory. With Get off my Land this concept is more implicit than with Ralph, as they do not blatantly say this. Instead it is shown by the man’s body language and clothes as it is clear that he does not fit in around that general area. However, in Ralph’s case the director makes it clear that he is in an unfamiliar environment through the use of the dialogue. Both films start and finish with minimal dialogue but have long conversations in the middle. The protagonist is unable to understand the language and because of this, and the fact that the director does not put in any subtitles, the audience feels as confused and lost as he is.
