Weekly film: Deadpool 2

Weekly film: Deadpool 2

Deadpool 2 is an action, comedy, superhero film that was directed David Leitch (John Wick, Atomic Blonde) and distributed by 20th Century Fox. The main theme of the film (as described by Deadpool himself) is about family. It was released on May 18th 2018

The film focuses on the new characters much more than the old characters, which is understandable as it focused more on Deadpool's X-Force team rather than the X-Men. Still, I would have liked to see a bit more of Colossus and Negasonic Teenage Warhead in the middle of the film. There are plenty of new characters in the film including: Cable played by Josh Brolin (No Country for Old Men), a hard as nails time-traveller, Domino played by Zazie Beetz a mutant who possesses the power of being lucky and Peter a regular person "with the power of type one and type two diabetes" who is there because he "just saw the ad". One character from the first film that got more screen-time is Dopinder the taxi driver who has his own character arc in this film- to become a mercenary like Deadpool. But once again Ryan Reynold's was spectacular in his portrayal of Deadpool, giving hilarious lines of dialogue whilst also showing how tragic Deadpool's life can be.

The film contains a lot more self-awareness than the first on; making references at itself and the actors in the film. In fact, few are safe from Deadpool's jokes with him making jokes about the X-Men, The Marvel Cinematic Universe, DC and even Disney's Frozen. They kept the opening credits joke from the first film but this time they parody James Bond opening credits, even having Celine Dion singing a song that sounds like it was taken straight from a Bond film. The song "Ashes" was released as a single and a music video on May 3rd 2018. It currently has over 29 million views on YouTube.

The first Deadpool film had quite a small budget of only $58 million but due to the huge reception of that film and the amount of money that it made, the sequels budget was nearly doubled at $110 million. It grossed $125.5 million in its opening weekend dethroning Avengers: Infinity War as the highest achieving film of the weekend. So far it has managed to gross over $598 million altogether becoming the 3rd biggest film of 2018 so far.

Honestly, I would not say that Deadpool 2 was better than the original but it definitely was not worse. It was on the same level (which is saying a lot as the first was hilarious). It took all the elements from the first film that was loved and just added to it. The language, violence and innuendos were still there but the explicit sex scene was taken out. This is probably because the first film had to do a larger job of shocking audiences. Where the first film was a love story, Deadpool 2 is a family film.
