Weekly Film: Avengers: Infinity War

Weekly Film: Avengers: Infinity War

Avengers: Infinity War is a film released in 2018 by Marvel. It is directed by Joe and Anthony Russo who also directed two other films in the Marvel Cinematic Universe: Captain America 2 and 3. The film is a huge culmination of 18 films and 10 years of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. It contains themes of: love, loss, power and sacrifice. As with the previous entries it is distributed by Walt Disney Studios. It had 2 unique selling points. The first is that Infinity War marks the first time that a feature-length movie has been filmed entirely on IMAX cameras. The 2nd is that the directors promised that several characters will be killed off which was something that fans wanted due to the argument that the films lack stakes if characters always survive.

There are over 40 main characters in this film with pretty much every superhero from previous films making a return. These include: The Avengers, The Guardians of the Galaxy, Spider-man, Doctor Strange and Black Panther and others as well as a lot of their supporting casts. Despite it being an Avengers film, the primary antagonist, Thanos, has the most screen time and we mainly go with him throughout his plan. This has the effect of making us sympathise with him and could arguably make an audience slightly agree with his points and motivation.

The soundtrack in the film was composed by the same person as the original Avengers, Alan Silvestri. This managed to give a nostalgic feel to it as there were some throwbacks to the previous films. The soundtrack also frequently shifts in tone due to the unpredictability of the narrative. The marketing for the film was very effective. They released a little video celebrating the beginining of productions for the film with Robert Downey Jr (Iron Man), Chris Pratt (Star Lord) and Tom Holland (Spider-man) thanking the viewers for getting them there, whilst also having the director recap previous events whilst also giving a little insight into his plan for the film. The 1st trailer was viewed 230 million times in its first 24 hours, becoming the most viewed trailer of all time in that time period. There was also a small trailer shown at the Superbowl. The 2nd full trailer was viewed over 1 million times in 3 hours. Marvel also lit up the Burj Khalifa building in Dubai counting down the days until the film was released. Overall, the films marketing cost between $300 and $400 million. This does not even include marketing. With the inclusion of marketing the budget is nearer to $800 million making Infinity War one of the most expensive films ever made.

The internet site Fandango reported that it broke pre-ticket sales records in just 6 hours. On the opening day it broke the Thursday record and gained $106.7 million. By the end of its opening weekend it gained $258.2 million braking the record for highest amount of money gained on opening weekend beating the previous record set by The Force Awakens. It also broke the record for fastest film to hit $1 billion getting it in just 1 week! It is currently the 4th highest grossing film of all time. It has received a 86% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, 8.9/10 on IMDB and has already been nominated for 3 awards: The MTV Award for Best film, Best Villain and Best fight.

I heavily enjoyed this film and it is en route to become one of my favourite films of all time, partly because of the sheer scale of it and partly because of the shock ending. One negative thing I would say about it is that because of the amount of characters and amount of things going on, it is quite hard to keep up with it all. There were times when I forgot about certain characters and their motivation and I believe that this could put a lot of people off.
