No Country for Old Men- Character Profiles

Llewelyn Moss- The main protagonist of the film. He is the focal point of the narrative. He is not always portrayed as the traditional hero as he has selfish motives and makes various mistakes. His past as a Vietnam Veteran is mentioned a few times in the film which gives an explanation on why he is able to fire a gun so well. He is quite a tactical character who often thinks ahead with his actions. However he still ends up dead by the end of the film. Unlike most heroes the audience does get to see his death happen but only see his lifeless body on the floor. He also does not get to have the final confrontation with Moss that the audience were expecting to see and that the film was building up to.

Sheriff Bell- Sheriff Bell is an aged Sheriff who is entering the retirement stage of his life. He is seen to have good morals and usually plays by the book. He is a very traditional man who has followed in his father and grandfather's footsteps. It is clear that he is worried for the future as he realises the crime in his town is changing for the worse. What is different about Bell from other characters of this genre is that he is unable to save Moss or avenge his death, he is unable to catch Anton Chigurh and he does not even get to meet him. The title of the film is likely a reference to his character as he feels that there is no place in this new and changing world for an old man like him.

Anton Chigurh- The clear antagonist of the film. He is evil, ruthless and relentless. He is an outsider who prefers to work alone. He has is own set of morals and follows certain rules when murdering people eg. a flip of a coin. He creates his own weapon showing that he has a high intelligence and possibly experience and expertise in this field. He believes himself to be an agent of fate. He is seen as a supernatural being who has an inhuman nature to him. He also stands out as he is not a traditional character from the Western genre. From his all black suit to his advanced weaponry it is clear that he from a future time period. He also does not get to have the final confrontation with Moss that the audience were expecting to see and is not brought into justice or pays for his wrongdoings in any way, shape or form.
