Who is creatively responsible for Casablanca?

Casablanca was created in 1942. As a result of this, it is a product of the classical Hollywood style that films of that era all followed. That means it contains all the attributes of a film created during this time period.

The Old Hollywood Studio System is the phrase used to describe how films were made between the 1930's and 1950's. All of the films,whilst being set in different locations, were filmed on a sound stage in a studio. The old studios produced a lot more films then they do today often putting out around 200 a year.  The studios had power over the film and would make the big decisions. Casablanca was made by Warner Bros who were responsible for films that were socially realistic and were able to capture emotions and twists in their plots. This is why Casablanca is the way that it is. The studio is the reason for the type of genre and narrative that Casablanca falls under.

The director of the film was Michael Curtiz. He also had a creative choice in what went on in the making of Casablanca. Curtiz is described as an auteur- a film director who influences their films so much that they rank as their author. This means that he is credited for most of the films production from hiring the actors to writing the script.  

In their films they would often contain the same actors playing the same sort of roles. This was because the actors signed long-term contracts with the studios agreeing to perform in their films. Humphrey Bogart (who played Rick) and Ingrid Bergman (who played Ilsa) also had a part to play in bringing Rick and Ilsa to life. Whilst they are not primarily responsible for the creation of Casablanca, they clearly had a part to play in its success. Bogart was reported to not get on with Bergman so the fact that he was able to put this aside to portray a believable romance took skill.

There are many different people that are creatively responsible for Casablanca's success. Overall however, the studio had the biggest say in the production and final direction of the film.

Film theories and Shaun of the Dead Propp theory: Propp's theory of narrative is that it is driven by 8 characters. The Hero, villain, princess father, dispatcher, donor, false hero and sidekick. This works for Shaun of the Dead as each character could fall into these brackets. Shaun is the obvious hero, Ed is the obvious sidekick and it could be said that the villains are the zombies themselves. Liz is the princess character as she is the typical love interest. Yvonne could be described as the helper or the donor character due to her help in the narrative. Weekly Film: Baby Driver

Baby Driver Analysis Baby Driver is an action, comedy film released in 2017 starring Ansel Elgort. It contains themes of crime, relationships and trying to leave an old life behind. It was directed by Edgar Wright, someone who has been known to do comedic films in the past such as Shaun of the Dead and Ant Man. The opening of the film relies heavily on its soundtrack which is impressively synchronised into what is happening in the narrative. This use of intertexuality is quite nostalgic to a certain period of time (the 80s). Colour is subtley used throughout the film reflecting a characters personality. At parts of the film where the main character, Baby, was living for the thrill of the chase, the environment is very bright and sunny.
