Industry news: Black Panther's record breaking

Black Panther was a highly anticipated film by Marvel Studios directed by Ryan Coogler and starring Chadwick Boseman. It was the first mainstream superhero film with a predominantly Black cast. Because of this many people saw this as more than a film, but as a sign of cultural appreciation.

The American ticket monitoring service Fandango reported that within its first 24 hours, ticket pre-sales for the film were the largest ever for a Marvel film. By the time the film was released it was 4th of all time only losing out to the 3 recent Star Wars films. The film was released in the USA on February 16th, however many countries got it sooner such as the UK, where it was released on February 13th. In the UK, it received the highest opening day box-office of 2018 so far, gaining £2.67 million in its first 24hours. But it didn't stop there!  In the US it grossed $75.81 million in its first 24 hours which is the 2nd largest opening for a Marvel film behind The Avengers. It broke the February opening weekend record that was previously held by Deadpool. In its first 4 days it managed to gain around $235 million which is more than rival company DC's Justice League made in its entire theatrical run ($228 million).

It has also been watched and well received by many famous actors, directors and public figures including: Will Smith, Chris Hemsworth, Chris Pratt, Patty Jenkins and even Michelle Obama. Because of the praise, it was announced that there will be a sequel in the near future with Marvel's producer Kevin Feige stating that he wants Coogler to return. At the moment it has a 97% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes making it higher than any Superhero film this past decade.

There could be many reasons for why Black Panther did so well. Firstly, because of its already well established fanbase of both Marvel comics fans and movie fans. Secondly, because it is the last Marvel movie before the highly anticipated Avengers: Infinity War which will be released in April 2018. But also because of the the cultural significance of it. Part of the reason of why it was loved by so many was because it showed Black people in Africa in a positive light. It wasn't about slavery or drugs or other things that films with black people are commonly shown doing in films or television. Instead it was inspiring for young black people as they see one of their own on screen, helping people and doing good.

Edit: As of 4th April 2018 it is the 11th highest grossing film of all time
